Estilsona: Everything You Need To Know

Stilson is a medicine made up of an active substance called prednisolone. It is a corticosteroid that exerts anti-inflammatory action that has a intermediate duration.

What is Estilsona indicated for?

  • Bronchitis or asthmatic attacks.
  • Laryngitis.
  • Atopic dermatitis: when the outbreaks are moderate to severe.
  • Allergic conditions.

The duration of treatment with this drug varies depending on the severity of the process and depends on each case. In any case, it is advisable to use Estilsona the shortest time possible, achieving the desired result.

Keep in mind that this drug takes about 4 hours to exert its effect, so you have to space the doses at least 8 hours. In this way, the half-life of prednisolone in the blood that produces the desired effect is achieved.

How is Estilsona taken?

Estilsona comes as a solution in a 10-milliliter bottle. Each milliliter of this medicine contains 7 milligrams of prednisolone. Before taking the corresponding dose, it is advisable to shake the bottle so that the solution is homogeneous.

Although treatment with Estilsona is prescribed by the specialist depending on each patient, the maximum daily dose is 40 milligrams a day.

Usually taken twice  a day, every 12 hours, being able to mix it with milk or juices to facilitate its intake. 

What side effects does Estilsona have?

When using Estilsona for less than 10 days the risk of side effects is slight. In general, the most common side effects are increased appetite and restlessness.

Although there are hardly any side effects when the treatment is short, as in the case of bronchitis, laryngitis or atopic dermatitis, when the treatments are longer, there should be medical control, since the side effects that may appear may be of greater importance.

These secondary effects include the following:

  • Increase in blood glucose levels.
  • Retention of liquids.
  • Appearance of stretch marks or acne.
  • Healing problems.

When should prednisolone not be used?

This medicine is contraindicated in case you are allergic to prednisolone or any of the excipients in the Estilsona formula. It is also not indicated if you are experiencing a viral disease, since prednislone can worsen symptoms.

When you have to vaccinate the child, it is better not to be treated with Estilsona for two months before giving the vaccine. If, for whatever reason, the circumstance occurs that the vaccination coincides with the Estilsona treatment, you should consult with your pediatrician.

In addition, with regard to vaccines and Estilsona, it must be borne in mind that at least 2 weeks should elapse between the date of vaccination and the start of treatment with this medicine.

How should I stop taking Estilsona?

Because it is a corticosteroid it should not be stopped abruptly, especially if you have been using it for long periods of time. Among the reasons why treatment should not be stopped abruptly are the possible sudden drop in glucose levels and blood  blood pressure. 

A sudden withdrawal of Estilsona can also affect the production of the adrenal glands, since the corticosteroid that you take by mouth competes with the hormones that are produced in the body.

On the other hand, when the treatment is stopped abruptly, the body suffers a sudden drop in corticosteroids, which can alter all vital signs. For this reason, it is necessary to reduce the doses little by little, and give the body time to progressively adapt to hormonal changes.
